This week in Philly music: Handel, a benefit concert, and more

The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill is hosting a concert to benefit Syrian refugees. The 30-voice Gallery Choir will be joined by soloists and Baroque-era instruments in a performance of Bach’s Magnificat and Handel’s Foundling Hospital Anthem under conductor Daniel Spratlan. A wine reception and art exhibit will follow the performance. The concert will be Saturday, November 14 at 8pm at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill, 8855 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia. Admission is $10 at the door.

Seraphic Fire, a chamber ensemble based in South Florida, presents Handel’s Coronation Anthems, along with Charpentier’s Te Deum and Purcell’s King Arthur, under the direction of Patrick Dupré Quigley. The concert will take place on Thursday, November 12 at 7:30pm at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, 20th and Cherry Streets, Philadelphia. Tickets are available here.

Soprano Rebecca Myers Hoke and the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra will join forces in a program featuring Bach, Britten, and two Philadelphia composers, Samuel Barber and Benjamin C.S. Boyle. Prometheus is Philadelphia’s democratically run, conductor-less orchestra that not only holds several performances a year but is also highly involved in community outreach. The concert will be followed by a reception. Tickets are $30 for general admission or $20 for seniors and students. The concert will be held on Friday, November 13 at 7:30pm at St. Paul’s Church, 22 E. Chestnut Hill Avenue, Philadelphia.
