This week in Philly music: Fine folk and holiday Bach

The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society presents Cecile Licad on piano in a program featuring works by Reinagle, MacDowell, Siegmeister, and Griffes. The concert will take place on Tuesday, November 24 at 8pm, at Benjamin Franklin Hall at the American Philosophical Society, 427 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. There will be a free pre-concert lecture at 6:45pm by Ross Amico. Tickets are $10-24.

Folk music has played an important role in classical composers for centuries. Four of these composers, all from Central and Eastern Europe, will be featured in a program given by the Fine Art Music Company, a small chamber ensemble of stringed instruments, clarinet, and piano. Works by Zoltán Kodály, Aram Khachaturian, Béla Bartók, and Ernö von Dohnányi are slated for performance. There will be two performances of this concert. The first will be at Ivy Hall, 6331 Lancaster Avenue, on Saturday, November 28 at 8pm. The second will be at the Ethical Society of Philadelphia, 1906 S. Rittenhouse Square, on Sunday, November 29 at 3pm. Tickets are $20-30.

The Bach @ Seven Cantata Series continues with Christmas on Logan Square in a performance of Bach’s Cantata BWV 61, “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland,” and a premiere of seven settings of the O Antiphons by local Philadelphia composers. Choral Arts Philadelphia teams up with the Philadelphia Bach Collegium under the direction of Matthew Glandorf for this concert. It will take place on Wednesday, December 2 at 7pm at St. Clement’s Church, 2013 Appletree Street, Philadelphia. The concert is pay-what-you-wish, and there will be a free post-concert reception as well.
