This week in Philly music: A Beethoven benefit and much more
Flutist Elivi Varga and pianist Rollin Wilber team up for a Fine Art Music Company concert featuring works from Scandinavian countries, including works by Edvard Grieg, Howard Hanson, and Jean Sibelius, among others. The program concludes with Walter Gieseking’s Variations on a Theme by Grieg. “Scandinavian Accents” will take place on Wednesday, December 16 at 7:30pm at the Ethical Society Building, 1906 S. Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia. Tickets are $30 (general), $24 (seniors), $20 (students and EHS members).
The Gamut Bach Ensemble, a relatively new group, presents a concert of Bach solo cantatas and various arias featuring soprano Sarah Shafer and baritone John Moore, under the direction of Koji Otsuki. The program includes Cantata 82, Ich habe genug, as well as Cantata 199, Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut. The concert will take place under the auspices of the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society on Wednesday, December 16 at 8pm at St. Mark’s Church, 1625 Locust Street, Philadelphia. Tickets are $10-24.
The Community Outreach Partnership presents Liebesfreud, a local string quartet, in their annual “Beethoven Birthday Benefit Concert” to support their homeless shelter, now in operation for 31 years. The concert will include Beethoven’s string quartet No. 10 in E-flat, Op. 74, “the Harp,” and string quartet No. 12 in E-flat , Op. 127. The concert will take place on Sunday, December 20 at 5pm at Trinity Memorial Church, 22nd and Spruce Streets, Philadelphia. Tickets are $10 for general admission, while patron supporters can choose to donate $50.
