Barnes on the Block, Italian summer on Passyunk, and Astral Mixtape

Coming up this week, the Barnes and Mural Arts host their summer block party, Passyunk Ave comes together to recreate Italian summer strolls, and Haddonfield’s crafts and fine arts festival turns 30. Then, get in touch with the music with a live performance tied to Da Vinci Art Alliance’s newest exhibit, dance it out over at the Institute of Contemporary Art, and get involved with DANCE IQUAIL!’s inaugural Celebrate Mantua festival.

Passyunk Passeggiata
Every Thursday, July 11-August 31, 2024
East Passyunk Avenue

Starting this week and every Thursday through the end of August, the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District will present a weekly happy hour and sidewalk market inspired by evening summer strolls in small Italian towns. Live music, seasonal menu specials, extended shopping hours, and more will line East Passyunk Avenue from 5pm to 7pm. Nearly two dozen restaurants, bars, and breweries, and over 20 boutiques and retail shops will be part of the festivities.

ICA Summer 2024 Opening Celebration

Institute of Contemporary Art, 118 South 36th Street, Philadelphia

Visit ICA this Friday for a celebration of its exhibits Where I Learned to Look: Art from the Yard, which celebrates the foundational role of yards in shaping contemporary art in America, and Joanna Piotrowska: unseeing eyes, restless bodies. The evening features live music performances, country barbecue, and ice cream inspired by the colors in unseeing eyes, restless bodies. ASL interpretation will be provided for the event.

Astral Mixtape
Saturday, July 13, 1-3pm
PHS Pop-Up Garden at Manayunk, 106 Jamestown Avenue, Philadelphia

Astral Artists, in tandem with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, present Astral Mixtape in performance this weekend. An ensemble on the Astral roster, Astral Mixtape is a band that creates and performs original compositions and arrangements using a unique lineup of two violins, cello, piano, synthesizer, and electronics to combine pop, jazz, and contemporary music for an imaginative take on a “classical concert.” The outdoor concert is free, family-friendly, and open to the public.

DANCE IQUAIL! celebrates Mantua

DANCE IQUAIL! will debut Celebrate Mantua, a new festival where community partners will converge to showcase their services and programs for the public good. A variety of cultural offerings include talent shows, dance classes, fitness programs, local food vendors, kids play area, a community line dancing party, and more, serving as a collective call to action to engage with Black and queer talent.

Searching for a Song to Sing Along: Embodied Sound Live
Saturday, July 13, 2-4pm
Da Vinci Art Alliance, 704 Catharine Street, Philadelphia

DVAA’s exhibit, Embodied Sound, features multidisciplinary artist Julie Woodard and how she processes life through songwriting, time in nature, and the creation of textile terrains, interweaving found materials and heirloom scraps to create a mixed-media visual vernacular for her original music. This weekend, Woodard will be in attendance to perform the original songs that are part of the works in the exhibition. It’s billed as an informal event designed to be a dialogue—a chance to engage and interact with the art in a live, present way.

30th Annual Haddonfield Crafts & Fine Art Festival

Over 200 artists will gather this weekend for this two-day outdoor festival, featuring ceramics, glass, jewelry, wood, paintings, photography, and more.

Barnes on the Block with Mural Arts Philadelphia

PNC Arts Alive, Mural Arts Philadelphia, and the Barnes Foundation are back on the Block this weekend with the return of its summer outdoor fixture. The free block party features food trucks, vendors, live music, a beer garden, creative activities, live paintings with Mural Arts, and much more. The family-friendly afternoon is also a chance to check out the Barnes's new exhibition Matisse & Renoir and Visions—we’ve been encouraging you all summer to check them out!
