The unofficial end of summer is this three-day weekend—can’t believe we’re here already. Alas, this also means that Fringe season is also right around the corner, kicking off things next week. We’ll be publishing some editor picks next week, so keep an eye out for that! In the meantime, be sure to check out these new exhibitions. Each of them holds perspective around community and impact through a variety of mediums, so you might find something unique and refreshing.

Roots & Reflections
Now through Friday, September 20
Scribe Video Center, 3908 Lancaster Avenue, Philadelphia

Scribe Video Center, in collaboration with the Gary Smalls Gallery Project, will host this new exhibit through the official end of summer. Here, four artists explore narratives passed down from several generations of family members with a focus on elders. The artists—Wanda Payne, Dawn Stringer, Ellen Tiberino, and Misty Sol—each use their own visual languages to connect with their ancestral roots.

Admission is free, and the exhibit can be viewed Monday through Friday from 11am to 7pm.

Recklessly Optimistic closing reception
Saturday, August 31, 6-8:30pm
Chimaera Gallery, 3502 Scotts Lane, Philadelphia

Recklessly Optimistic, the exhibit from Detroit-based artist Adrian Hatfield, addresses anxiety about “our current environmental crisis, balanced by hope that humanity can rise to meet the challenge.” Through paintings that convey the dread, splendor, joy, terror, wonder, and the absurdity of human inaction, Hatfield has put together a sampling of art history, pop culture, scientific illustration, and more to help convey that hope.

The exhibition’s closing reception is this Saturday. The artist talk begins at 6:30pm. Be sure to register ahead of time.

Ancestors—The Eternal Return
September 4-29, 2024
Muse Gallery, 52 North Second Street, Philadelphia

This solo painting exhibition features the work of Philly-based Chilean artist Jacqueline Unanue. Taking inspiration from the Altamira caves in Spain and the El Maule region in Chile, the exhibition includes 15 works from her series created within the last year or so.

Pressing Change
September 5-October 20, 2024
Da Vinci Art Alliance, 704 Catharine Street, Philadelphia

Okay, so this one is not until later next week, but since we’ll be publishing a roundup next week dedicated to this year’s Fringe Festival, I wanted to make sure I got this one on people’s radar beforehand so it didn’t get lost in the mix. Pressing Change at DVAA looks to demonstrate how social justice can inform printmaking—and the printmaker themselves. See how the work of printmakers and educators Felisa Adderley, Joy Lai, and Sofie Rose Seymour is both impacted and impacts with a series of free workshops. There, those in attendance can learn about affordable printmaking practices, how messages are carved and stamped, and how voices can be amplified.

The opening reception is on Saturday, September 7, from 4pm to 7pm.
