This week in Philly, Earth Day celebrations are happening at Please Touch, Fairmount Water Works, and the Schuylkill Center with a variety of family-friendly events and activities. Then, we dive into an award-winning 2000s theater piece in Chestnut Hill, the Painted Bride plays some spring jazz, and a symposium focusing and channeling Afro-Asian solidarity arrives at Asian Arts Initiative.

Biomimicry: Mimicking Nature's Problem Solvers

This weekend might be a great time to get outside and get into nature, and gain some new perspectives about how nature works along the way. Fairmount Water Works is hosting a family-friendly pop-up activity event that explores biomimicry, the practice of learning from nature in order to solve human design challenges. Learn about biomimicry in daily life and also create nature-inspired solutions on your own.

Celebrate Earth Day this weekend at the Schuylkill Center with a variety of family-friendly activities. A scavenger hunt, guided hikes, local food trucks, art presentations, a dance performance are all set for this year’s edition of Naturepalooza, which also serves as a preview for the Center’s summer exhibit, TERRA: Bodies & Territories.

Painted Bride Jazz Presents: Satellite Sound Jazz Series

Painted Bride is launching a spring jazz series, and the first of three shows sets up this weekend. Presented by host of WRTI’s The Bridge J. Michael Harrison and the Black Squirrel Club, the series begins with a performance by the Jonathan Scales Fourchestra, an ensemble blending jazz, classical, progressive rock, Latin rhythms, and funk.

Crescendo Symposium: on Afro-Asian Solidarity

Asian Arts Initiative, 1219 Vine Street

Asian Arts Initiative hosts a public symposium this weekend, coinciding with their exhibition Crescendo: How Art Makes Movements 1981-1999. The symposium looks to explore the evolution of Afro-Asian solidarity from historical movements like the Black Panther Party to contemporary grassroots efforts. A catered community meal and a chance to converse and network with others will be offered to guests, too—and the event is pay-what-you-wish.
