Blazing Saddles, Wong Kar Wai films, and plenty of LA private eyes
The BSR September 2024 repertory movie roundup
Summer’s over, but the fall repertory cinema season is just beginning. September has a packed lineup at the region’s repertory theaters, including a 70s comedy classic, the start of a series of world cinema seminars, and a series of LA shaggy dog adventures.
The highlights
City of God
Sunday, September 8, 7pm
Colonial Theater, 227 Bridge Street, Phoenixville
HBO and Max just debuted a new sequel series called City of God: The Fight Rages On. But the original 2002 City of God movie, directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, is unavailable to stream on that service. Luckily, there’s a chance to see it on the big screen.
Blazing Saddles 50th anniversary
Sunday, September 15, and Wednesday, September 18
Various theaters
Mel Brooks’s famed satire of both Hollywood Westerns and American race relations marked its 50th anniversary earlier this year, and to celebrate, Fathom Events is presenting special screenings on two nights in September. Contrary to popular belief, the film has not been canceled and probably never will be. With these showings, it’s less canceled than ever.
Wong Kar Wai: Heartbreak and Pineapple
Tuesday, September 24, 7pm
Bryn Mawr Film Institute, 824 Lancaster Ave, Bryn Mawr
This fall, Paul Wright, PhD, of Main Line Classical Academy, will host a four-part seminar on the work of Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar-wai, featuring four films he made between 1990 and 2000. It starts with Days of Being Wild on September 24 before continuing in October with Chungking Express, Happy Together, and In the Mood For Love.
Pros and Cons: Shaggy Dogs at Film Society Center
Various times
Film Society Center, 1412 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia
If you’re really into movies about Los Angeles-based private eyes, professional and amateur—and in one case, an undercover surfer—the Philadelphia Film Society is running a series throughout September on the pros and cons of shaggy dogs. It’s so overstuffed with great movies that there wasn’t enough room for everything: The Nice Guys, also showing at the Film Society Center at the end of the month, isn’t included in it.
