This month, we’re approaching the end of Sight & Sound 100, reaching all the way up to sixth on the list. There are more cinema classics to be seen elsewhere in the city, too, including familiar titles well-suited to be seen on the big screen.

Martin Scorsese has a new film, Killers of the Flower Moon, and for the occasion, BMFI is offering a We Love Martin Scorsese series this month. It includes showings of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Waltz, and the shorts Italianamerican and American Boy: A Profile of Stephen Prince.

The series includes Cinema Classic Seminars on Taxi Driver on Wednesday, November 8, and Raging Bull on Wednesday, November 29, taught, respectively, by Andrew Owen and Amy Corbin.

The Philadelphia Film Society’s Sight & Sound 100 countdown is nearing the home stretch, and this month will feature numbers 19 through six, with the final five arriving in December. There’s plenty of great stuff throughout the month, including Persona, Cleo from 5 to 7, The Godfather, Singin’ in the Rain, and Beau Travail, before culminating in number 6, Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, which will show three times in 4K.

Steven Spielberg’s World War II film from 1998 marks its 25th anniversary this year, and it’s getting an anniversary re-release for two nights in November. The release will also include a special feature about the famous “boot camp” the cast participated in prior to the filming.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas, which is both a Halloween movie and a Christmas movie, turns 30 this year, and it’s getting plenty of anniversary recognition. This includes a Philadelphia Orchestra performance of Danny Elfman’s score as the film plays behind the musicians.
