February is just about here, and while attention will be focused—for the first half of the month anyway—on the Eagles’ Super Bowl run, there are plenty of movies to enjoy while the weather remains frigid. A tribute to David Lynch, Valentine’s Day themes, and a screening of one of Bong Joon-ho’s best.

The highlights

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Monday, February 24, 7pm
The County Theater, 20 East State Street, Doylestown
Ambler Theater, 108 East Butler Avenue, Ambler

We tragically lost the great David Lynch on January 15, and considering his ties to Philadelphia and the “Eraserhood,” we can probably expect some retrospectives of his work in the coming months.

Nothing elaborate has been announced yet, but two local theaters the same night will be showing Lynch’s 1992’s Fire Walk With Me, the extremely disturbing Twin Peaks prequel that explored the final week in the life of Laura Palmer. Like a lot of Lynch’s body of work, Fire Walk With Me didn’t make much of a box office impact upon its initial release but gained more appreciation over time.

When Harry Met Sally…
Wednesday, February 5, 6:30pm
Bryn Mawr Film Institute, 824 Lancaster Avenue, Bryn Mawr

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are reuniting for a Super Bowl commercial, set, naturally, at Katz’s Deli. But while that’s almost certain to be underwhelming, that’s not the case for the movie it’s referencing, 1989’s When Harry Met Sally…

Written by Nora Ephron and directed by Rob Reiner, it’s one of the great Hollywood romantic comedies, one consumed with the eternal question of whether or not men and women can truly be friends.

And if you’re interested in the Meg Ryan/Nora Ephron collaboration that would follow four years later, BMFI is also showing Sleepless in Seattle, on February 13.

Parasite
Beginning Friday, February 7
Various theaters

Bong Joon-ho’s sharp social satire about a poor family slowly insinuating itself into a rich family became the first foreign language film to win the Best Picture Oscar in March 2020. Now, nearly five years after that Oscar win, Parasite is getting a re-release in IMAX theaters ahead of the release of Bong’s follow-up film, Mickey 17.

The Avenging Quartet and Mission of Justice
Friday, February 14, 7:30pm
PhilaMOCA, 531 North 12th Street

There are plenty of traditional Valentine’s Day showings of films this February (see below), but PhilaMOCA is planning something a bit different: “ GIRLS 'N' GUNS VALENTINE! A 16mm Hong Kong Double Feature,” courtesy of Exhumed Films. Both films star Moon Lee and Yukari Oshima.

The Avenging Quartet, from 1993, offers “frenzied kung fu action as a duo of female Chinese cops confront a duo of female Japanese thieves,” while 1992’s Mission of Justice casts the duo as “federal agents who are tasked with destroying a drug-trafficking ring in Thailand.”
