It’s December, which for the monthly repertory movie calendar means several Christmas movies, a Hanukkah movie, as well as a tribute to the favorite son of the Philadelphia movie canon.

Through December 7, the Philadelphia Visitor Center is celebrating the first-ever RockyFest with events throughout the city, from the Philadelphia Museum of Art to the Philadelphia Zoo to a conversation with Dr. Paul Farber, the Monuments Project director who hosted a podcast last year about the Rocky statue.

But naturally, there are also showings of the first six Rocky movies, including a marathon of all six, which will take place at the Film Society Center from December 6-8. The original Rocky shows in 4K on Friday, December 6, and the version of Rocky IV is the Ultimate Director’s Cut that Sylvester Stallone debuted in Philly back in 2021.

The 1992 movie, the first Muppet film that followed the passing of Jim Henson, is both a first-rate musical and one of the best adaptations of the Dickens classic. It also originated that trope about imagining a movie remake in which all of the characters except for one are played by Muppets.

The Philadelphia Orchestra will play along with the movie for the two nights at Marian Anderson Hall, but if you’re looking to pay a bit less and listen to the original score instead, it’s playing throughout the month in Phoenixville.

Adam Sandler’s Eight Crazy Nights
Thursday, December 19, 7pm
Khyber Pass Pub, 56 South 2nd Street, Philadelphia

Hollywood has made countless Christmas movies over the last century, but only one major Hanukkah film, and that’s Sandler’s 2002 animated musical adventure which takes its inspiration from his more famous The Hanukkah Song.

Philadelphia Jewish Film and Media, along with the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History, are presenting Eight Crazy Nights to mark the Festival of Lights, as part of its annual Latkes & Vodkas Movie Night.

The event is for those aged 21 and over only.
