Long ago, in the Beautiful Epoch at the beginning of the 20th century, there was a wonderful form of entertainment called operetta — a magical mix of romance, charm, and lots of singing. And what could be more romantic than the story of the long-nosed swordsman and his hopeless love? Concert Operetta of Philadelphia maintains the glories of the operetta world by presenting concert versions of its best-loved works. This weekend, they’re offering two one-act operettas by Victor Herbert in one concert happening Saturday and Sunday: Madeleine (which was originally written for the Metropolitan Opera and is celebrating its 100th anniversary) and the Philadelphia premiere of a one-act Cyrano de Bergerac with lyrics by Harry B. Smith and a libretto by Alyce Mott. The show will also feature Philadelphia Orchestra violinist Philip Kates.

Concert Operetta Theater presents Madeleine and Cyrano de Bergerac Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 23 at 4pm at The Academy of Vocal Arts, 1920 Spruce Street, Philadelphia. Tickets are $30 for general admission, $20 for seniors (55+), and $10 for students. Children under 16 are free. Tickets will be available at the door. For advance tickets and more information, call 215-389-0648 or visit www.concertoperetta.com.
