Coming up in Philly music: The sounds of autumn at Tempesta di Mare
Vivaldi’s Four Seasons concertos are some of the most overplayed works in the repertoire. Vivaldi did, after all, write 1500 other concertos. Still, the Four Seasons concertos are appealing pieces that deserve their popularity, and Tempesta di Mare has found a new way to package them. This season, Tempesta is presenting four concerts that center on the Vivaldi concerto appropriate to the season. They’re starting with my personal favorite, the Autumn concerto, with its evocation of feasting and hunting. The other items on the program will be a French Baroque Ballet des saisons, a “rustling concerto” for two flutes, and a revenge cantata that will add some emotional chill. Tempesta’s stylish concertmaster Emlyn Ngai will solo in the Vivaldi. The soloist in the cantata will be Marguerite Krull, a soprano with an international career who’s been one of Tempesta’s best guest stars in previous seasons.
Tempesta di Mare will present A Chill in the Air at two Philadelphia concerts: October 22 at 8:00pm at The American Philosophical Society, 427 Chestnut Street; and October 23 at 4pm at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill, 8855 Germantown Avenue. Tickets are $25-39, and they’re available online and at the door.
