Coming up in Philly music: Schumann to ‘Catfish’ at the Curtis Summerfest

The Curtis Institute’s Summerfest is primarily an educational program for professional and amateur musicians who want to spend part of their summer studying chamber music. For the rest of us, its public concerts are a much-needed addition to the summer music schedule. The July 21 concert will include a pair of 21st-century works, along with perennial favorites like Schumann’s Quartet in E-flat Major for piano and string trio. Mark Applebaum’s Catfish is a trio for three percussion players who can choose their instruments. The version you hear at this concert may not sound like any of the versions you can hear on YouTube. A 2006 piano trio takes a more conventional approach, but it was composed by a Summerfest faculty member, Jonathan Bailey Holland, who’s been building a solid reputation since he graduated from Curtis in 1996.

The Curtis Institute of Music will present its Young Artist Summer Program Faculty Recital on July 21 at 7pm at the Curtis Institute of Music’s Field Concert Hall, 1726 Locust Street, Philadelphia. Tickets are $25 and they’re available online and by calling 215-893-7902.
