Coming up in Philly music: Schumann, a shepherd, and cookies

The 1807 & Friends chamber series has been attracting a devoted following for over 30 years. It began with a group of young musicians playing for their own pleasure at an obscure apartment at 1807 Sansom Street, and it’s retained some of that informal, sociable atmosphere. Most of the musicians are active Philadelphia Orchestra members, such as flutist David Cramer, or hyperactive orchestra retirees, including violinist Nancy Bean and cellist Lloyd Smith. The guest pianists are Philadelphia ornaments like Cynthia Raim, who will play a central role in all the pieces scheduled for 1807’s season opener. They’re emphasizing Schumann’s music this season and the opening program will end with a guaranteed winner, Schumann’s second piano trio, followed by the customary cookies-and-cider reception.

The other two items on the program are less familiar. Carl Maria von Weber’s Trio in G Minor for flute, cello, and piano is a charmer complete with a waltz and a Shepherd’s Lament. Carl Reinecke’s Undine sonata for flute and piano tells a story that has inspired complete operas by Dvořák and other composers. Cramer and Raim will tell it with two wordless instruments.
