Coming up in Philly music: Guitars on glaciers
The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society frequently presents programs that might surprise people who think the chamber music repertory is limited to string quartets and piano recitals. On November 17, they’re presenting the PCMS premiere of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet — a unique foursome whose concerts include everything from classic Spanish works to eclectic, specially commissioned pieces by contemporary composers. Their PCMS program will include music from the time of Cervantes; transcriptions of Bach’s orchestral music; and a group of Brazilian pieces.
The grand finale will be a new piece by composer and jazz guitarist Pat Metheny which the quartet premiered in October. Metheny’s Journey to the Sun is a complex six-movement work that combines jazz riffs with a library of classical guitar techniques and a narrative structure based on a trip through Glacier National Park.
The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society will present The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet on November 17 at 8pm at the Kimmel’s Perelman Theater, Broad and Spruce Streets, Philadelphia. Tickets are $30 and they’re available online and at the door.
