Everything begins. Everything ends. The first concert in the Lyric Fest song series will pair songs that cover both ends of that poignant arc.

It’s the kind of subject Lyric Fest has been playing with all through its 15-year history, with possibilities that range from torch songs to hymns in praise of spring and revolution. The typical Lyric Fest program takes 20 to 30 songs and creates an event packed with surprises and emotional moments. The songs are taken from the global art song tradition, embellished by pieces from show music and other sources.

Lyric Fest’s codirectors, mezzo Suzanne DuPlantis and pianist Laura Ward, are both art-song specialists who understand the subtleties and nuances the form requires. They’ll be joined by two younger vocalists: soprano Symone Harcum and a rising young baritone, Jared Bybee, who’s scheduled to play the title role in the premiere of a new opera, The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs.

Lyric Fest will present Sparks and Embers ~ Reflections on Beginnings and Endings on Saturday, November 10, at 4pm at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill (8855 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia) and on Sunday, November 11, at 3pm at the Academy of Vocal Arts (1920 Spruce Street, Philadelphia). Tickets are $25 in advance online; $30 at the door with $10 student tickets available.
