Coming up in Philly music: Cello and double bass mix for sounds of summer
This year, Curtis Institute's Summerfest attracted 114 students from 13 countries. Professional musicians and advanced amateurs come here to study chamber music with veteran Curtis grads such as Canadian cellist Soo Bae (Curtis ‘01) and Philadelphia bass player Heather Miller Lardin (Curtis ‘96). The next Summerfest faculty recital will showcase the faculty's string players and pianists. Bae and Lardin will perform a duo for the unusual pairing of cello and double bass, by the 19th-century Paganini of the bass, Domenico Dragonetti.
Other items on the program include the violin sonata that expresses Leoš Janácek’s reaction to World War I and selections from Brahms’s Hungarian Dances, in the original version for four hands and one piano. The finale will be a contemporary piece, the lively 2013 Aria Fantasy for piano and string trio, by one of Philadelphia’s most successful composers, David Ludwig.
The Curtis Institute of Music will present its next Summerfest faculty recital on July 28 at 7pm at the Curtis Institute of Music, Field Concert Hall, 1726 Locust Street, Philadelphia. Tickets are $25, available online and by calling 215-893-7902.
