The program for the third Curtis Summerfest faculty concert mixes two acknowledged masterpieces with some less familiar opuses. The masterpieces are Debussy’s Syrinx for unaccompanied flute and Fauré’s C Minor Quartet for piano and string trio. The novelties include four pieces for percussion, complete with a group of dances by Igor Stravinsky arranged for two marimbas. New York organist Patrick Kreeger (Curtis ’13) will open the evening with a display that should give the Curtis organ a good workout. The 1930 Sonata Eroica by the Belgian organist Joseph Jongen is a 16-minute virtuoso piece noted for its melody, inventiveness, and grandeur. Natalie Zhu will be the pianist in the Fauré, and the other performers include several recent Curtis graduates with flourishing careers in chamber music, academia, and the orchestral world.

Curtis’s Summerfest Faculty Recital: Debussy, Fauré, and Jongen is coming up on Friday, July 20 at 7pm at Curtis’s Field Concert Hall (1726 Locust Street, Philadelphia). Tickets ($28) are available online and at the door.
