Germantown’s Maxwell Mansion is the only place in town where you can step into the Victorian era in the restored home of a real Philadelphia family. On Saturday, December 14, you’re invited to a Dickens Christmas Party, where the Ghost of Christmas Present will be reading The Night Before Christmas, Louisa May Alcott will stop by to read some of her own holiday stories, and Philly actor and director Josh Hitchens will perform his one-man adaptation of A Christmas Carol. In the evening, grown-ups will gather for a champagne reception at which Dickens ambassador Edward G. Pettit will read Dickens’ A Cricket in the Hearth: A Fairy Tale for Home and offer a talk on the legendary writer’s Christmas stories.

Saturday, December 14, Dickens Christmas Party, 2-5pm; An Evening with Charles Dickens at 7pm. Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion, 200 West Tulpehocken Street in Germantown. Christmas party $20 for adults and teens, free for kids 12 and under accompanied by an adult; evening event $30 ($25 for members). Reservations required.
