For its second annual Black History Month exhibition, Germantown Avenue's Gravers Lane Gallery is bringing West Coast artist Chris Hopkins, known for entertainment industry work like his movie poster for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and his Brooklyn-based son, Justin Hopkins, together for a single show. "American Heroes and Innovators: New Paintings and Drawings by Chris & Justin Hopkins" opened February 1.

A commission through the US Air Force first led Chris to a series of deeply researched paintings that tell the story of WWII's Tuskegee Airmen, the country's first black airmen, who trained and served while the US military was still racially segregated in the 1940s. But the project became a personal passion that now includes over 40 works, many of which are on display now at Gravers Lane. Son Justin is a successful composer and illustrator who contributes portraits of "adventurous" modern African-American icons like Questlove and Janelle Monáe.

"American Heroes and Innovators: New Paintings and Drawings by Chris & Justin Hopkins" is on display at Gravers Lane Gallery in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, 8405 Germantown Ave, from Feb. 1 until March 15. For more information, call 215-247-1603 or visit the gallery's website.
