A four-city musical and visual extravaganza
This week, the Philadelphia Orchestra (conducted by Donald Runnicles) presents a unique mash-up of Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes (from his opera Peter Grimes) and inspiring urban landscapes from four American cities to go along with the music. Co-commissioned by the four musical institutions, BAFTA-winning artist and filmmaker Tal Rosner has created a visual backdrop for the concert using photos and footage from the four cities.
Calling his video creation a “digital tapestry” of the cities, Rosner chose to match each of the four Interludes (“Dawn,” “Sunday Morning,” “Moonlight,” and “Storm”) to a single city. Philadelphia will represent “Sunday Morning.” The rest of the program features Britten’s Violin Concerto performed by guest violist Janine Jansen, Pärt’s Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten, and Mozart’s “Linz” Symphony.
These performances by the Philadelphia Orchestra, alongside a video animation by Tal Rosner co-commissioned by the New World Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, and the San Francisco Symphony, are coming up on March 27 at 8pm, March 28 at 2pm, and March 29 at 8pm at the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall, 300 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia. For tickets and more information, call 215-893-1999 or visit www.philorch.org.
