I remember being taught the story of stone soup when I was in kindergarten. The classic folk tale—which tells the story of a village suffering through famine comes together with what little they have to make a soup together after being inspired by a wandering soldier—resonated with me. I’ve got this memory burned into my brain where the teacher asked us to bring something to school to add to a soup we were going to make together. It was a warm moment, and is a key piece in my foundation: community is so important when we don’t have enough as individuals. This story, this practice, feels essential now more than ever.
Philadelphia Magic Gardens opens a new exhibit this week: Eustace Mamba’s Stone Soup. Contributor An Nichols wrote: “Stone Soup clearly speaks to PMG’s overall objective. Individually, we all feel isolated and struggling. However, when we join as a community—we support each other; we feed each other, and we strengthen each other.” The mixed media exhibit opens this week, and is a great chance to experience and capture the stone soup mentality. Give our preview a read, and go check out the exhibition if you can!
This week’s roundup covers Philly Theatre Week, which kicks off on March 31. I’ve picked out some highlights for you in case the overall roster feels overwhelming at first. There’s lots to see!
Be good, Philly. See you around!
